The Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC), which conducts the state civil services examination, is set to cancel its preliminary exam scheduled on February 10, 2013.
The reason: Not a single department of the state government has informed the MPSC about its requirement of officers so far.
The cancellation of the Maharashtra State Civil Services (or Rajyaseva) exam for the recruitment of class I officers in the state services will affect more than 3.5 lakh candidates.
The MPSC had announced the tentative dates of the preliminary exam on its website, and was set to announce the dates in city newspapers on December 12. The departments were asked to send in their requirements by November 30, but even after a month, MPSC has not received any response.
“When we asked a few departments what the hold-up was, they said all documents were destroyed in the fire that gutted Mantralaya in June, due to which they are unable to chalk out their needs. We have no choice but to cancel the exam for now,” said a top official at MPSC.
MP Jadhav, under-secretary MPSC (preliminary exam),said, “We are writing to the MPSC (main) about the cancellation of the prelims. The next date will be announced only when we get a response from the government.”
Jadhav clarified that they need at least three months to conduct the exam after receiving departments’ proposals.
As most state departments suffer from a staff crunch, MPSC had decided to hold the civil services exam twice a year from 2013 onwards. However, officials now say that it looks difficult now.
In 2012, the preliminary exam was conducted in June after much delay, and the main exam was held in September. Currently, candidates are being interviewed for 432 posts available across Maharashtra.
